Total Recall

A good science fiction story is not easy to write. Total Recall is loosely based on a short-story by famous science-fiction writer Philip K. Dick, the mind behind “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”, the basis for Blade Runner, “Minority Report”, and “A Scanner Darkly”, that was adapted in a trippy rotoscoped film version by Richard Linklater. You perhaps remember the original Total Recall directed by Paul Verhoeven and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger: a fun and fast action-scifi movie. The 2012 adaptation, directed by Len Wiseman of Underworld fame, does not share much with the original, besides being based on the same short story.

The Dark Knight Rises

Christoper Nolan started his dark-toned Batman trilogy with 2005’s Batman Begins, followed by the superb The Dark Knight in 2008. This years it is time for the conclusion of the series: The Dark Knight Rises. We have been treated with a range of villains in the first two films: Ra’s al Ghul, the Scarecrow, the Joker, and Two-Face. In this final installment Batman primarily battles Bane, although Catwoman also makes appearances, but is she a friend or foe?

The Avengers

Marvel teased us with the release of this film near the end of various previously released super hero flicks like Captain America and Iron Man 2. This would be the movie that unites all the super heroes from the Marvel universe. Well actually, only those that had not been previously licensed to other studios. Hence, you will not find characters from X-Men, Spiderman, or the Fantastic Four in this movie. Director Joss Whedon brings back fond memories of creative television series like Firefly and Dollhouse, but what does he make of a 220 million blockbuster production?
